Cesar Azpilicueta has sent a message of support to Chelsea teammate Mason Mount after his penalty miss on Saturday.
Chelsea and Liverpool clashed in the FA Cup final over the weekend and, like in the League Cup final earlier in the year, it was decided by a shootout.
Sadio Mane missed a penalty for Liverpool, whilst both Azpilicueta and Mason Mount saw their spot-kicks saved.
And whilst Azpilicueta missed as well, it was Mount’s miss that came last and handed Liverpool the win, meaning his will likely be the one everyone remembers.
The Chelsea skipper, though, has assured Mount he will have plenty of chances to win the FA Cup:
“I missed my penalty as well,” Azpilicueta said. “It’s not just Mason, we are all together here. We had the list [of takers] and we all felt confident and we wanted to shoot. This time it happened (the missed penalties).
“I’m sure Mason will have a lot of chances [to win the FA Cup]. He’s a young player. I’m sure he will [be okay]. It’s part of football. We are the first ones who are hurt.
“We want to do our best, we want to score the penalty and make our fans happy. But unfortunately, it didn’t happen. We have to put our heads up and go for the next one.”
Mason Mount’s Wembley curse
However, Mason Mount may be hoping that the next final he plays in does not come at Wembley.
This is because he has now lost a total of six finals at England’s national stadium.
Mount lost the 2020, 2021 and 2022 FA Cup finals at Wembley as well as the 2022 League Cup final with Chelsea. The 23-year-old also lost a play-off final with Derby and, of course, Euro 2020 with England.
