President Joe Biden has said the US needs to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazine and said the minimum age to purchase guns should be raised to 21 in the wake of the mass shooting in Texas last month.
Giving a speech at the White House, Mr Biden said “too many everyday places have become killing fields” in the US, adding: “How much more carnage are we willing to accept?”
He said background checks for purchasing firearms need to be strengthened along with red flag laws.
And he described opposition to debating changes to gun control legislation from Senate Republicans as “unconscionable”, saying: “We can’t fail the American people again.”
It comes after 19 children and two teachers were shot dead at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, last week.
