Manchester United star David de Gea has, on Friday, beaten out the competition to bag a highly-coveted individual award.
The prize in question? The club’s Player’s Player of the Season prize.
Despite regular criticism of his displays on the part of the Red Devils faithful, shot-stopper de Gea has been recognised by his peers as the standout performer of what of course proved a season to forget at Old Trafford in 2021/22.
Across the campaign as a whole, the Spanish international racked up 10 clean sheets in all competitions, on his way to seven Man of the Match accolades, a joint-high alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.
De Gea was also named United’s Player of the Month for all of November, December and January.
The award marks the 31-year-old’s fourth to this point in his stint in Manchester, two more than any other player since its inception back in 2006.

‘Worst player’
Evidently, though, despite the recognition of his teammates, many remain of the opinion that de Gea was not quite deserving of his PPOTY prize.
Taking to the comments section of the club’s announcement in their droves, the Red Devils faithful made their feelings crystal clear, with a roundup of some of the Twitter highlights showcased below:
