Newcastle United have announced the £15m permanent capture of Aston Villa’s Matthew Targett following a successful loan spell for the second half of the campaign.
The Magpies enjoyed a strong end to the season, with Targett making 16 appearances for Eddie Howe’s side during that time as they climbed into the top half of the table, after being in the relegation zone at Christmas.
And, in an attempt to strengthen their squad over the summer, Eddie Howe has made Targett his first addition as he looks to push for European football next campaign. More are expected to follow, with speculation continuing to link the Tyneside outfit with another left back in the form of Atletico Madrid’s Renan Lodi.
Aston Villa can confirm that @MattyTargett has completed a permanent move to Newcastle United for a fee of £15m.
We would like to wish Matt all the very best in the next phase of his career.

They are also expected to add a striker, centre back and central midfielder, while they have been linked with a goalkeeper in the shape of Dean Henderson too.
What Targett said
Speaking to the media following his completed move, Targett spoke how easy the decision was to make and his happiness to pen his future in Newcastle.
“I’m absolutely delighted to sign a four-year contract with this club,”, the Englishman said. “For me, it was an easy decision to make the loan permanent after the welcome I had from my fellow players, the staff, the supporters and the owners so I’m really happy to be here.”
Meanwhile, Eddie Howe added: “Matt had a fantastic impact after joining on loan in January and made a big contribution to some excellent team performances.
“He is a great lad and a top professional who undoubtedly makes us stronger so I’m delighted he sees his future here.”
