Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is looking to add some experience to his squad this summer, according to reports.
The Red Devils have, as always, been linked with countless names already this summer.
The likes of Jurrin Timber and Frenkie de Jong, both of whom have worked under Erik ten Hag previously, were the two names most heavily linked.
However, reports in the media and comments from De Jong himself suggest neither of those players is moving to Old Trafford this summer.
As a result, one of the more likely names set for a United switch in 2022 is Christian Eriksen, who is a free agent after his six-month deal with Premier League side Brentford expired at the end of last season.
Given Eriksen’s age and the fact United are not desperate for cover in his position, the move does not appear to make that much sense.
However, a report from Give me sport has shed some light on to why Manchester United look to be targeting Eriksen.
It is claimed Manchester United want a player aged 30 or over. Erik ten Hag is hoping to land Christian Eriksen, with United feeling more experience is required in order to turn things around after a dismal 2021/22, which saw them slump to their worst-ever points total in Premier League history.
Is experience the right call?
Whilst signing some more experienced players may seem like a good idea, Manchester United have gone down this route before and it has not ended well.
Edinson Cavani, Angel di Maria, Radamel Falcao and many more were brought in as established, experienced names before going on to underwhelm in Manchester.
On the flip side, United have also tried to focus on youth, largely under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and that didn’t work out too well either. See Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka as key examples.
