Former Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has given his reasoning behind why he thinks Chelsea are in danger of being left behind Tottenham.
Tottenham had an excellent end to the 2021/22 campaign, they finished 4th in the Premier League – securing Champions League football in the process – and also ended up just three points adrift of Chelsea, who finished 3rd.
Such a small gap between the two London sides is pretty remarkable given how badly Tottenham started 2021/22 and due to the fact Chelsea, after signing Romelu Lukaku, were expected to challenge for the league title this past campaign.
Now, former Chelsea winger Wright-Phillips believes Tottenham could overtake his old side in the upcoming season with the momentum they are building:
“I can see Chelsea getting left behind by Tottenham. They became so resilient towards the back end of the season and were so good on the counter attack,” he said. “Antonio Conte is a great manager and the club seems to be opening the cheque-book for him so he’ll make things very difficult for the teams around him.”
Tottenham have also had a much better start to the 2022 summer transfer window.
The Lilywhites have brought in two players in the form of Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster. They also look set to sign Yves Bissouma in the coming days from Brighton for a reported £25m.
As for Chelsea, they have lost two of their best central defenders and also look set to lose Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan, leaving the Blues without a natural centre-forward heading into 2022/23.
