Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed plans for a “consultative referendum” as the first minister outlined when a proposed vote on Scottish independence should take place.
Speaking in the Scottish Parliament, Ms Sturgeon said the Independence Referendum Bill will outline a vote to take place on 19 October, 2023, with the question: “Should Scotland be an independent country?”
The Scottish first minister said she is “ready and willing” to negotiate with the Westminster government on the terms of holding the referendum.
Ms Sturgeon said the vote must be “lawful” and that this is non-negotiable.
