The Supreme Court decision on Roe v. Wade has gotten me thinking about the pro-life movement. While I believe that abortion should be legal and should be a woman’s choice, I do hold some respect for those who believe so strongly in the sanctity of life and that banning abortion has become their core issue and motivating cause.
I have some questions for these people. Do they support stronger gun control laws? We have 45,000 gun deaths annually in the U.S. and experience more mass shootings than there are days in a year. Should something be done?
Are they concerned about the disproportionate number of deaths of Black boys
and men that result from interactions with police? Public officials, election workers and their family members often receive death threats for simply doing their job. Is any of this acceptable?
Can we find it in ourselves to respect and value the lives of people who are gay or transgender? Young people who are not accepted or acknowledged for who they are will experience a much higher risk for depression and suicide. Then there is health care. Much needs to be done to secure health care for all.
Life is precious — I think we can agree on that. Maybe there are other things we can agree on.
