Best budget FPL players
An important aspect of Fantasy Premier League is finding the right balance of budget and premium options.
For example, trying to hit Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland, Harry Kane and Kevin De Bruyne into your side simply is not practical, even though it is technically possible.
Instead, most players opt for around two top-tier players and then try to build a team around them, mixing in mid-range and budget players.
This article will look at the best budget options available on FPL this year. For context, a budget defender, by our standards, costs no more than 4.5m, a midfielder no more than 6.5m and a forward no more than 6.5m.
We are also not ordering this list as it does not make much sense to rank players from different positions against each other. Instead, it will just showcase the very best budget players from every position.
Aleksandar Mitrovic, forward (6.5m)
Solid budget forward options are few and far between this year. But if you wish to use one of Harry Kane or Erling Haaland, you will probably need a budget forward to partner them.
And one of the better options does appear to be Aleksandar Mitrovic of Fulham.
Granted he has not been the best in the Premier League over the last few years, but he broke the Championship goal-scoring record in 2021/22, and that sort of stat cannot be ignored.
Brenan Johnson, forward (6.0m)
One of the only other semi-decent budget forwards on FPL this year is Nottingham Forest’s Brenan Johnson.
He has no experience in the Premier League so is a slight gamble. However, he was Forest’s top scorer and top assister last term, suggesting he will be their main source of goals in the top-flight as well.
Robert Sanchez, goalkeeper (4.5m)
The best budget goalkeeper on FPL is once again Robert Sanchez.
Despite losing some big names over the last year, Brighton’s defence remains solid, in part because of the Spaniard.
The Seagulls boasted the 6th-best defence in the Premier League last term, behind only the top-four and Wolves.
Gabriel Martinelli, midfielder (6.0m)
Gabriel Martinelli is a minor rotation risk for the Gunners this year, but having him in your side could pay off.
The Brazilian scored six goals and provide seven assists for the north Londoners last term in the league. This came despite the fact he did not become a regular starter until towards the second half of the campaign.
And now Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is gone, we should, in theory, see Martinelli used as the north Londoners’ main left-winger this season.
James Ward-Prowse, midfielder (6.5m)
Reliable if unspectacular. James Ward-Prowse is never going to be one of the very top midfielders on FPL.
However, his set-piece-taking ability sees him garner a respectable number of goals and assists every year, making him a useful budget option.
Andreas Pereira, midfielder (4.5m)
Andreas Pereira’s inclusion on this list depends on his transfer from Manchester United to Fulham.
At the time of writing, it is not yet official, but it is expected to be confirmed very soon.
And because Pereira was a United asset when FPL was launched, they priced him as a player who probably wouldn’t get any minutes at all.
Now though, his move to newly-promoted Fulham should see the attacking midfielder garner a reasonable amount of game time. And even if he doesn’t score that may points, the cheapest you can get a midfielder on FPL for is 4.5m, making Pereira an excellent bench option.
Jack Harrison, midfielder (6.0m)
Jack Harrison has been one of the best budget midfielders on FPL for the last few years.
Even last term when Leeds United seriously struggled in the first half of the campaign, Harrison still ended up with eight goals and three assists.
And now Jesse Marsch is at the helm for a full campaign, Harrison is expected to improve on that tally.
Tariq Lamptey, defender (4.5m)
Tariq Lamptey is likely to be one of the highest-scoring budget defenders on Fantasy Premier League this season.
The full-back had a slow start to 2021/22 owing to injury, meaning he was unable to truly capitalise on Brighton’s excellent defensive record.
But now he is back fit, he should be able to, when rotated with another 4.5m defender, provide you a constant supply of clean sheets.
Jonny Otto, defender (4.5m)
Perhaps the best 4.5m defender to rotate with Lamptey is Wolves’ Jonny Otto.
Jonny missed a large chunk of 2021/22 due to injury. However, he came back for the final 11 games weeks to start every match and also score two goals from wing-back.
Wolves also had the 5th-best defence in the Premier League last term.
Neco Williams, defender (4.0m)
The final budget player you should look to sign is Neco Williams.
Like Pereira, he was priced so low because he was not expected to feature very often for Liverpool.
However, he has since moved to Nottingham Forest were he will probably be their new starting right-back.
As a result, even if he doesn’t score too many points each week, he is the perfect option to fill that 5th defensive spot in your FPL team as very few people start more than four defenders every week.
