Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Ajax winger, Antony.
Since Erik ten Hag took over at United from Ajax, a number of the Dutch powerhouse’s top players have, of course, been linked with a move to Manchester.
One of the main names tipped for an Old Trafford switch early on in the summer window was Antony.
Antony would likely be an excellent option for United, as they are very short in the wide areas at present.
Jesse Lingard left the club for free at the end of last month. This leaves just Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga as natural wide players for the 2022/23 campaign.
So, moving for Antony, whose electrifying pace and quick feet would cause Premier League defences all sorts of issues, seemed like a smart move.
The Brazilian is still young at 22 years old, but is already performing at the highest level – assisting four and scoring two in six Champions League outings this past season.
However, a transfer for Antony seems very unlikely at present.
Ajax are determined not to let last season’s squad be dismantled, with Ryan Gravenberch, Sebastien Haller, Andre Onana, Noussair Mazraoui and Lisandro Martinez all having headed for pastures new.
And now, new Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder has revealed that he is intent on keeping hold of his South American winger this summer.
Schreuder said: “I really think he will stay. Of course, we have sold a lot of players now. That has not happened in recent years.
“We have also bought players. But we have sold so many players that I assume nobody will leave.”
Will Manchester United turn their attentions elsewhere? Or will we see Ten Hag give someone like Facundo Pellistri a chance?
