Manchester United are believed to be interested in the services of FC Barcelona’s Sergino Dest.
United currently have two senior right-backs on their books in the form of Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
For some time, it was Wan-Bissaka who dominated the right-back spot, with Dalot little more than a fringe option.
However, under Ralf Rangnick and now Erik ten Hag, it has become obvious that the latter is viewed as the no.1 choice, meaning Wan-Bissaka does not have much of a future at the club.
Now, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on United’s right-back situation, linking the club with Dest whilst doing so:
“More recently, we’ve also seen some speculation involving Manchester United and the USA international, and my understanding is that they could be open to signing a new right-back at some point, but it will depend on Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s future,” Romano explained.
“At the moment Man United have not opened any talks for Dest. They are expecting offers for Wan-Bissaka – there had been contact with Crystal Palace but so far no official negotiations.”
Dest’s Barcelona stint
Barcelona snapped up Sergino Dest in October of 2020 from Dutch powerhouse, Ajax. La Blaugrana are believed to have paid around €21m to bring the right-back to the Camp Nou, a move that seemed like solid business at the time, with Dest appearing to be the latest in a long line of top stars to emerge from the Johan Cruijff Arena.
However, Dest’s stint in Catalonia has proven far from plain sailing so far. Instead, the young full-back has been a victim of the current crisis Barca as a club are enduring.
And, under current manager Xavi Hernandez, Dest has struggled for minutes, though this is also in part due to injury and covid issues.
