The Lionesses have ended England’s 56-year wait for a major trophy, beating Germany 2-1 after extra time in the Euro 2022 final.

Both teams warmed up on the pitch and formed huddles before kick-off. Germany played in their dark green strip, while England played in white.
Just before kick-off, news broke that Germany’s Alexandra Popp had suffered a muscular injury, meaning Lea Schüller started in her place.
German coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg and England’s manager Sarina Wiegman watched on as the two sides played out a entertaining first half which ended goalless.
In the 62nd minute, England’s Ella Toone was set through on goal and put the Lionesses ahead with a sublime lob.
Germany piled on the pressure and England were unable to hold on. Lina Magull put the Germans level in the 79th minute as she flicked in a cross at the near post.
Refereeing the match was Kateryna Monzul, who just months earlier fled the war in Ukraine. The 41-year-old was living in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, until the Russian invasion in February.
Despite both sides creating good chances to pull ahead, the opening 90 minutes ended 1-1.
Just 10 minutes before the end of extra-time, England’s Chloe Kelly muscled off her marker at a corner and poked a shot at the German goal. Merle Frohms saved her effort but Kelly stabbed home a rebound, sparking jubilation at Wembley.
The Lionesses held on to claim a historic victory celebrated across the nation.
