Bangor City Council will vote on Monday whether to make masking optional during high COVID transmission periods a week after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention eased some of its pandemic restrictions like quarantining and masking requirements.
City government currently requires people to wear masks and face coverings in public buildings when there is a high level of transmission in Penobscot County, as determined by the U.S. CDC.
But city staff now recommend that the council roll back that requirement, and make it only a suggestion that people wear masks when caseloads are elevated, according to a memorandum from Assistant City Manager Courtney O’Donnell.
The City Council will vote on the issue at its next meeting on Monday night.
