Try as I may, I can not find reassurance in Sen. Susan Collins’ expressed confidence that the Respect for Marriage Act, currently held up in the Senate by Republican opposition, will ultimately pass.
If memory serves me, this is the same Susan Collins who voiced her confidence that Donald Trump had learned ” a pretty big lesson” after his first impeachment; and who also stated her certainty regarding Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s acceptance of the settled law that was Roe v. Wade.
Collins would appear to be either remarkably naive, or possessed of extremely poor judgment.
Or perhaps something else is at play. I think the delay of a vote on the measure in question until after the midterms will simply allow candidates from her party to disguise their opposition to the basic human right that is same-sex marriage until it is too late for the voters to make their voices heard.
Either way, I take no solace in Susan Collins’ confidence.
