AUGUSTA, Maine — A new sign to stay hopeful was installed in Augusta on Monday.
The 25-foot sign was designed by artist Charlie Hewitt, who also designed signs that are on display in Bangor, on the Speedwell Building on Forest Avenue in Portland, at the Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick and on the side of the Bates Mill Complex in Lewiston.
“Maine is a dark place in the winter and I felt compelled to illuminate that corner of our world with a message of hope,” Hewitt wrote of the inspiration behind the public art displays.
The United Way of Kennebec Valley and several area businesses made it possible to install the newest sign.
The city will hold a “first lighting” event on Tuesday night to mark the first time that the “Hopeful” sign will bring light to Augusta.
