FOXBOROUGH — Bill Belichick dodged almost a dozen questions on Mac Jones’ ankle injury Wednesday afternoon, saying the Patriots are taking it “day by day” over and over — and over again.
He did provide a bit of insight into New England’s contingency plan this weekend in Green Bay though. If Mac Jones can’t go, Belichick confirmed that it’ll be Brian Hoyer starting, not rookie Bailey Zappe.
Belichick said that the game-plan wouldn’t need to change a whole lot with Hoyer stepping in.
“Not too much. Brian’s got a lot of experience,” Belichick said. “He’s done everything that we would want to do. Mac would be able to do it with I think minimal practice if that was what it was. So we’ll just take it day by day. We’re not really doing anything different.”
Belichick later voiced faith that Hoyer will be ready to roll if his number is called.
“He knows (the offense) better than anybody from an overall experience standpoint,” Belichick said. “Brian’s had a lot of experience, he’s been in a lot of different systems, seen a lot of football, taken a lot of snaps for us in various capacities. Thought he played well in the preseason. If we need him to go, he’ll be ready to go.”
Amusingly, Belichick wouldn’t even answer whether Jones has been diagnosed with a high ankle sprain.
“What do I look like? A doctor? An orthopedic surgeon? I don’t know,” Belichick replied.
