The fab five! Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves aren’t always public about their family life — but as their kids continue to grow, they’re letting fans in more and more.
The Dallas Buyers Club star met his future wife in 2006 and two years later they welcomed their first child, son Levi, in July 2008. Their daughter, Vida, arrived in January 2010. The Oscar winner proceeded to propose to Alves in December 2011 and the pair tied the knot in June 2012.
Six months later, the couple welcomed their third child, son Livingston, in December 2012. As their family grew and evolved Alves gave Us Weekly a rare glimpse at the pair’s home life in Texas.
“[We do] a lot of staying at home, cooking together or getting a hotel room that is 10 minutes away from the house,” the Just Try One Bite author exclusively told Us in April 2018 of how she and McConaughey stay connected. “Just the fact that you don’t have to wake up to kids screaming for help with something. It already does something to a mom’s brain.”
Alves noted that spending quality time with their brood is something that is important to both her and the Dazed and Confused actor. “We cook together. Even if I’m running late from work I say, ‘We’re having a late dinner,’” she revealed. “Does it happen every single day of the week? No, but it happens a lot.”
Once the duo’s children began reaching their teenage years, Alves explained how their family dynamic switched.
“You know, it’s interesting because when you have little ones, you are physically exhausted, right? And I feel like when you get to the teenagers … it’s almost like you need more energy,” the Women of Today founder exclusively told Us in July 2022. “You need more brain power because it becomes all very about the mind, right? It’s like a teenager [is] trying to find their identity and find how they’re going to navigate their lives. So I think that … for me, it’s more challenging in a good way.”
Despite feeling a little fatigued, Alves told Us that her children becoming young adults is a “beautiful” thing. “It’s inspiring,” she said. “It also makes you look at a lot of things that you are doing as an adult as well, you know, when you get to that stage.”
