April 1 was the 28th Annual Hike for the Homeless, the largest single annual fundraiser for the Bangor Annual Homeless Shelter. It was also our first in-person, all-together hike since 2019.
The day came with constant rain, wind, and temperatures barely above freezing. Nevertheless, many intrepid hikers turned out to walk in solidarity for people in our community who have no warm, safe home to return to when the weather turns foul. Friends and neighbors of all ages and demographics turned out to donate their money, time, and what could easily have been a much more comfortable Saturday morning to make this hike a success. My warmest thanks to you all!
Thanks also go to the staff and volunteers at the shelter who understand that people who lose the roof over their heads also tend to lose hope and dignity, and are greeted at the shelter with compassion. Enormous thanks also to the Omega Mu chapter of Phi Gamma Delta (UMaine FIJI) for volunteering to set up and pull down equipment, guide walkers along the route, collect donations — all in the freezing, soaking rain. Their presence lifted everyone’s spirits! Thank you to all the area businesses who gave generously to help make this year’s hike a success and for each and every one of you who have and continue to contribute to the efforts of the shelter. As one who was also homeless once, you each and all do make a difference.
