A Winterport man was seriously injured in a crash that occurred after he attempted to use an interstate crossover on Tuesday afternoon.
Nicholas Johnson, 23, had been southbound on Interstate 95 in a gray 2009 Nissan Rogue before attempting to use a crossover to turn into the northbound lane at around 2:45 p.m., according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss.
When attempting to access the crossover, Johnson traveled into the path of a southbound tractor trailer, and the Nissan was struck on its side near mile marker 161 near Plymouth.
Johnson became trapped inside his vehicle when it went off the road, and had to be extricated before being transported to the Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield with serious injuries.
The tractor trailer driver was not injured in the crash.
An investigation into the circumstances of the crash is underway. Drivers are reminded that the use of crossovers by civilian vehicles is prohibited.
