A construction worker killed at the site of Everton FC’s new stadium in Liverpool has been named.
Michael Jones, 26, from Kirkby, Merseyside, died in hospital following the incident at Bramley-Moore Dock, at around 1pm on Monday.
Mr Jones’s family described him as a “lifelong blue” who was “happy to be working on the new stadium”.
“The family would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support. It is with our greatest sadness that our beloved son, brother uncle and friend Michael has sadly passed away,” the statement said.
“We want to thank the NHS staff and work colleagues who did their best for Michael. He will be missed beyond words.”
A post-mortem to establish the cause of death is set to take place on Wednesday.
Merseyside Police said the force was working jointly with the Health and Safety Executive and enquiries remained ongoing.
On Monday, Everton FC posted on X (formerly Twitter) that everyone at the club was “heartbroken” by the news.
“The thoughts and condolences of everyone connected with Everton are with his family, friends and colleagues at this unimaginably sad time,” the club said.
The stadium is currently under construction and is set to be ready in time for the start of the 2025-26 season.
When completed, the stadium, which has an estimated build cost of around £500m, will seat almost 53,000 fans.
It will be known as the Everton Stadium.
