A month-long investigation by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency ended Monday with the arrest of a South Portland man on aggravated drug trafficking and firearm violations.
Michael McNamara, 52, was charged with three counts of aggravated trafficking methamphetamine, three counts of aggravated trafficking with a firearm, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and four counts possession of scheduled drugs.
MDEA reported that agents from its Cumberland District Task Force made undercover purchases of high-quality methamphetamine from McNamara at Spring Point Tavern in South Portland, during business hours, while McNamara was working as a general manager.
On Monday evening, South Portland Police pulled over McNamara on Cottage Road in South Portland and arrest him, reportedly without incident, on an outstanding arrest warrant for drug trafficking. At the time of his arrest McNamara had methamphetamine and cocaine in his possession.
After the arrest, MDEA agents and South Portland Police used a warrant to search McNamara’s Preble Street residence in South Portland, where they say they seized more than 1.5 pounds of crystal methamphetamine, ½ pound of cocaine, 1 ounce of crack, a 9mm handgun, several types of unidentified pills, and drug packaging and distribution materials.
MDEA says the drugs had an approximate street value of $80,000.
McNamara was brought to Cumberland County Jail where his bail was set at $100,000 cash.
He was expected to appear in Portland Unified Court on Tuesday.
