Thousands of Maine households lost power Saturday morning as wind speeds from post-tropical cyclone Lee as wind gusts topped 40 mph on parts of the coast.
The National Hurricane Center downgraded Lee to a post-tropical cyclone, but a tropical storm warning remains in effect for all of Maine’s coast and a large swath of the interior. The strongest winds will be in the midcast and Down East, where gusts will likely exceed 60 mph at times.
Hancock County had the most outages at around 9:30 a.m. with more than 11,000 households without power between Versant Power and Central Maine Power, followed by Washington County with 6,406 and Penobscot County with 3,877, according to Versant Power’s outages map. Central Maine Power was also reporting 2,016 outages in Androscoggin County, 1,364 in Cumberland County and 66 outages in Franklin County.
The Canadian Maritimes has been hit harder by outages with 124,674 Nova Scotia Power customers without power and 35,643 NB Power customers in New Brunswick in the dark around 9:30 a.m. The storm is predicted to make landfall in Nova Scotia later Saturday
