Speaker Kevin McCarthy did not commit to providing additional aid to Ukraine in its war with Russia ahead of a Capitol Hill visit later this week by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“I have questions for him,” McCarthy told reporters. “What’s the accountability in the money we already gave? What is the plan for victory? I think that’s what the American people want to know.”
He called Russia’s actions an “atrocity” and “we want to make sure that ends.” But McCarthy added: “I want accountability for whatever the hardworking taxpayers spend their money on.”
GOP divisions: Conservative House Republicans, in particular, have voiced opposition to providing additional aid to Ukraine. But Senate Republicans have vocally supported more.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has repeatedly made the case for more aid on the Senate floor, saying in remarks last week that U.S. assistance is subject to “unprecedented” oversight.
