A toddler was killed Wednesday afternoon after being hit by a tow truck in Chelsea.
At about 2:23 p.m., Maine State Police troopers responded to Windsor Road for a report of a child struck by a tow truck, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a press release.
At the scene, they determined that a 62-year-old male driver from Chelsea was traveling northbound on Windsor Road in his 2007 GMC flatbed tow truck when he struck a child.
The child, who was 21 months old, had been playing outside a residence on Windsor Road when she wandered into the roadway and laid down, Moss said.
The driver told police he did not realize it was a child lying in the road until the vehicle struck her. Troopers and witnesses performed CPR until Chelsea Fire and Gardiner Rescue arrived on scene.
The child was transported to Maine General Hospital where she was pronounced dead. State police continue to investigate the crash.
