LISBON, Portugal — The oldest dog the world has ever known died Saturday at the age of 31 years old, according to the Associated Press. Known as Bobi, the purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo breed was born on May 11, 1992, when his current owner was just 8 years old.
Bobi’s owner, Leonel Costa said the guard dog lived on a farm in the village of Conqueiros, Portugal, along with four cats. Bobi spent his days on the farm eating what his owner ate and enjoying the fresh air.
The record lifespan far surpassed expectations for the breed which typically has a life expectancy of 10 to 14 years. According to the Guiness Book of World Records, Bobi officially lived to be 31 years and 165 days old.
Bobi became the world’s oldest dog on record just a few years ago when he surpassed an Australian cattle dog, who died in 1939 at the age of 29.
