An active shooter has been reported in Lewiston.
Police are asking people to shelter in place, lock their doors and stay inside as of 8:15 p.m. Wednesday. People are asked to stay off the streets so police can diffuse the situation, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said.
There are investigations happening in two locations in the city, Moss said.
The suspect is still at large as of 8:40 p.m., the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office said.
Police have not said if there are any injuries.
Police are asking anyone who recognizes the man in the photos, wearing a brown hoodie and dark colored pants, to email [email protected] or reply on Facebook Messenger.
All businesses in Lewiston are asked to close or lock their doors as police investigate. Anyone who sees suspicious activity or individuals is asked to call 911.
Lewiston resident Robin Payne reported seeing a flurry of police cars, fire trucks and ambulances head toward Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant, located less than a quarter mile from Payne on Lincoln Street, at around 7:10 p.m.
At 7:19 p.m., footage from her doorbell camera showed a police officer outside her house with a long gun, and neighbors reported that he told them to go inside.
By 8:30 p.m., the ambulances had left the area but cop cars remained.
Lewiston Public Schools were holding parent teacher conferences Wednesday night, the Portland Press Herald reported. Anyone at or near a school was told to get to a safe place as the school went into lockdown, Superintendent Jake Langlais said.
“I am aware of and have been briefed on the active shooter situation in Lewiston. I urge all people in the area to follow the direction of state and local enforcement,” Gov. Janet Mills said in a statement.
Anyone who sees suspicious activity or individuals is asked to call 911.
