The Oceanside Mariners beat the Cony Rams 110-59 on Tuesday night in Rockland, and that 51-point differential can be attributed to the output of one player.
Fueled by a 24-point third quarter, senior Carter Galley scored a ridiculous 51 points for the Mariners in their first game back in action.
“I just got super hot,” Galley said. “Catch-and-shoot threes, pull-up jumpers — everything was falling.”
Galley’s 51-point outburst was just 13 off the modern state record and an emphatic statement for the reigning regional champions, who came just short of a Class B state title last February. At halftime, Galley had already scored 21 — en route to a 16-point Oceanside lead — but somehow kicked it into an even higher gear when play resumed.
“He’s one of those guys that gets so hot so fast, and he proved that last night,” Carter’s twin brother, Cohen, said. “He’s definitely one of, if not the best, shooter in the state.”
Carter averaged 22.1 points on 52 percent shooting last year, converting 60 total 3-pointers on 45 percent shooting from deep. He also averaged 4.1 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.2 assists.
Cohen complemented Carter’s astonishing performance with 20 points of his own. Having also suffered a state championship loss on the gridiron this November, the brothers are keyed in on winning a gold ball before they graduate.
“I just want to keep getting better every day, to make a run back to the state championship,” Carter said.
