She can do no wrong! Angela Bassett exudes confidence, elegance and grace — and her wardrobe is the perfect reflection of the Hollywood icon.
Through the years, the actress had dazzled Us with her red carpet style that includes body-hugging frocks and dazzling jumpsuits.
For TIME’s 2nd annual Women of the Year Gala in Los Angeles in March 2023, Bassett was a must-see in a lavender one-piece that featured feathered sleeves and a bow at the waist. The getup flattered the American Horror Story star’s fit figure and she completed the look with a Valentino clutch.
A few weeks earlier, the New York native turned heads in another look she’s become known to sport: a tailored suit. At the 25th Costume Designers Guild Awards in Los Angeles in February 2023, Bassett brought the drama in a black look by Moschino. The eye-catching design featured a cinched blazer that was equipped with a cascading train. She accessorized with a black clutch and a dainty fascinator.
That evening, she received the Spotlight Award, which was presented to her by her longtime costume designer Ruth E. Carter — who revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that Bassett’s measurements “haven’t changed in over 25 years.” (Carter has created Bassett’s onscreen looks for Black Panther, What’s Love Got to Do With It? and more.)
When she’s changing the definition of business professional with her suit, fashion lovers can count on Bassett to turn heads in a whimsical gown.
The 9-1-1 star was breathtaking at the 29th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles in February 2023, wearing a vibrant yellow number by Giambattista Valli. The dress was made of tulle and featured a protruding detail at the bodice as well as a ballerina-like hem. The soirée proved to be a victorious night for Bassett as she took home the Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role award for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Jennifer Austin is the brains behind Bassett’s looks, having worked with the Meet the Browns star for over six years. She opened up about styling Bassett, telling Us Weekly exclusively in March 2020: “The thing I love most about dressing Angela is her total and complete trust in me and my vision. She has let me change her image and style, push her out of her comfort zone, and has never questioned me or my choices.”
While the Otherhood star has commanded attention on several red carpets in bold hues, she wasn’t always into color. “I try to keep Angela in as much color as possible, because when I first started styling her she had a closet full of black clothes!” Austin told Us.
“Angela loves outfits that are comfortable and easy,” said Austin. “A jumpsuit is one of her favorite things to wear so it is always fun when I find one in a great color, fabric or one with an interesting neckline.”
