The city of Old Town plans to hire a new public safety director after Scott Wilcox, who held the position for six years, stepped down last month.
Wilcox’s last day was Dec. 15, 2023. The city appointed Assistant City Manager Travis Roy as the interim public safety director.
Old Town’s timeline for hiring was not immediately clear, but it faces an important decision after having Wilcox in leadership roles since 2015. He became the Old Town Police Department’s chief in 2015, then public safety director two years later.
The city is advertising the public safety position and waiting to see the number of applicants it receives, City Manager Bill Mayo said.
Roy’s duties are to provide administrative support and oversight for public safety until a new director steps in, he said.
Deputy chiefs maintain day-to-day operations within their departments. The short-term goal is for them to manage communication, departmental expectations and goals throughout this period of transition, Mayo said.
Wilcox will maintain a presence in Old Town as the new chief executive officer of the Old Town-Orono YMCA.
“Chief Wilcox has been an incredible leader and mentor to the men and women of Old Town Public Safety,” the city’s police department wrote on Facebook. “He came to work early every day to make sure he could see the employees on each shift. There was never a question [whether] Chief cared about his employees and he displayed that in many ways.”
