In 2023, more than 850 Bangor Daily News readers joined foundations and businesses from Maine and beyond to raise more than $200,000 to sustain independent local journalism at the BDN. Thank you.
Every dollar raised supports our newsroom budget, covering the salaries of reporters and editors, document and legal fees, publishing technology and hosting fees, mileage and other expenses directly connected to bringing you fact-based news and information about what is happening in Maine.
Recent BDN reporting has led to real impact, such as saving Mainers money on home heating by compelling a state agency to loosen requirements, shining a light on a neo-Nazi who wanted to establish a “white ethnostate” but ultimately fled from Maine, and in the days following the Lewiston mass shootings holding officials accountable by asking probing questions about a law designed to prevent such shootings.
We are especially grateful to Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare, the Institute for Journalism and Natural Resources, Report for America and the Unity Foundation for significant contributions in support of accountability reporting.
Subscriptions and advertising — both in print and digital — remain the strongest pillars of support for BDN journalism. When readers and businesses step forward to create a new community pillar of support, they recognize that local news is as important to healthy communities as other treasured institutions like libraries, hospitals and schools.
We are humbled to be able to play our part by helping strengthen Maine communities with independent local journalism. Thank you for allowing us to serve you.
