A Saco man in a utility truck led police on a stop-and-start chase on Tuesday morning, disabling a state police cruiser before his eventual capture.
At about 10:15 a.m., a state police trooper driving on Route 35 in the York County town of Lyman noticed a Maine Water truck swerving in its lane and exceeding the speed limit, the Maine Department of Public Safety said in a news release.
When the trooper turned on his lights for a traffic stop, the utility truck took off, and the trooper pursued it. The truck stopped at one point, according to police, then took off again toward Route 111.
The truck driver then pulled over and stopped, but when the trooper got out of his cruiser, the driver backed the truck into the cruiser disabling the police vehicle then drove away toward Alfred.
The officer was not injured.
The truck was intercepted and pursued by a York County Sheriff’s Office deputy, police said. The truck ultimately crashed at the intersection of Kennebunk Pond and South Waterboro Road in Lyman.
Police learned that the truck was stolen, and the driver, Ricky Cooper, 39, of Saco, had a suspended license and was on four sets of bail conditions.
Cooper was brought to Maine Medical Center to be treated for injuries. According to police, he will be arrested upon his release and charged with eluding an officer, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, violating conditions of release, and theft.
Police have not disclosed any additional details and said the incident is still under investigation.
