A Perry man, who had been facing a murder charge, reached a plea deal with prosecutors following a mistrial.
Donnell Dana, 40, pleaded guilty to one count of hindering apprehension, a misdemeanor, after a jury was unable to reach a verdict on murder charges, according to the Portland Press Herald.
Both Dana and 39-year-old Kailie Brackett of Perry were originally charged with murder in the death of 43-year-old Kimberly Neptune, who was stabbed nearly 500 times.
Neptune’s body was found wrapped in a blanket inside her apartment on Thunder Road in Perry on April 21, 2022.
In the days before the killing, the Bangor Daily News reported that Brackett had been heard publicly accusing Neptune of stealing money from her.
The pair had reportedly planned to steal money, jewelry and Xanax from Neptune.
In all, Neptune was stabbed 484 times in her legs, stomach, neck, and head, according to an autopsy conducted by the state medical examiner’s office.
Brackett was found guilty last month and is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 26.
Dana’s plea agreement is dependent on him not breaking the law and completing substance use disorder counseling.
