Gov. Janet Mills is proposing a state government Office of New Americans to help immigrants move to Maine. Charles Colgan, economist at the University of Southern Maine predicted in 2013 that there would be tough times ahead for Maine unless somehow Maine can persuade 3,000 young people per year for 20 years to move to Maine. Speaking of young people he said, “There are not half enough of them because not enough young people are born here.” Mr. Colgan has seemingly said more than he knows.
Since 1974, over 125,000 abortions have been performed in Maine, and of those 125,000, about 65,000 would be between the ages of 18 and 50, the peak working years.
This is indeed ironic that Mills, who is a supporter of what I consider to be abortion on demand, wants to quickly “fix” the problem that she and many others have created. It is as though she (and not only she but many others) are trying to cover up the biggest tragedy in Maine and U.S. history and then, place the burden on the backs of the survivors who will pay for the services needed to train immigrants. How long will that last, right now the average age of a worker in Maine is mid to late 40s.
