Mitchell Newman has been named the permanent concertmaster for the Bangor Symphony Orchestra.
The orchestra committee unanimously supported Newman’s appointment.
“It’s been my privilege to have shared music-making with Mitchell Newman for many years so continuing our collaboration in this way is a dream come true,” said Lucas Richman, the conductor and music director for the Bangor Symphony Orchestra.
During his career, Newman spent more than 30 years with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as work in music education and other initiatives.
“I am deeply honored to join the Bangor Symphony Orchestra as Concertmaster. I look forward to fostering a culture of musical excellence and community connection, and I am eager to contribute to the BSO’s vibrant future,” Newman said.
On April 28, Newman will be the featured soloist when the orchestra plays Richman’s violin concerto “Paths to Dignity.”
The concertmaster is the highest leadership role within an orchestra, second only to the conductor. It is customarily given to a violinist. The concertmaster sits in the first chair next to the conductor, leads the orchestra in tuning, playing solos and assisting with orchestra management, according to the Berklee College of Music.
