The Cony High Rams took down the Brewer Witches by a score of 48-37 in a Class A North girls basketball quarterfinal at the Augusta Civic Center Friday. The third-seeded Rams will play the winner of a quarterfinal matchup between Hampden and Gardiner at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Cony’s victory came on the heels of a heroic performance from junior guard Abby Morrill. Her 19 points led the way, including three three-pointers. Her teammate and fellow guard, senior Morgan Cunningham, aided Morrill’s shooting by scoring 11 points of her own, and hitting numerous big threes as the Rams overcame an early 10-point deficit. Senior guard Maci Freeman tacked on eight more points.
Sixth-seeded Brewer guard Allie Flagg led her team with17 points. Behind Flagg, her sister Abbie Flagg scored 8 points.
The Witches offense came out firing, jumping out to a 10-0 lead after only 3 minutes of action and refused to let Cony hit a field goal. Almost all of the Rams’ offense came exclusively from the free throw line as they scored their first six points of the game from the charity stripe. The script changed in the second half however, with Morrill and Cunningham pushing their side out to a 13-point lead with 3:01 to go in the fourth quarter.
Cony High head coach John Dennett was vocal all evening, compelling his players to push vehemently up the court on each possession. Morrill and Cunningham specifically seemed to find another gear once the first half ended, and once the duo got hot there was simply no looking back.
Allie Flagg answered both a Morrill three-pointer and a Cunningham three-pointer in the final frame but her efforts were for naught, as Cony was able to advance to the semifinal game next week.
