South Portland took home the boys team title, and Scarborough edged out three-time defending champion Bangor in the girls competition at Monday night’s Class A indoor state track championships held at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham.
The top three team scores in the boys division were held by South Portland (53), Mt. Ararat of Topsham (48.5) and Lewiston (46). In the girls division, the top three team scores were recorded by Scarborough (63.5), Bangor (57) and Portland (49.5).
South Portland’s boys team was led by junior Arnaud Sioho, who set a new state record in the triple jump (46 feet, 10.75 inches), finished runner-up in the long jump (22 feet, 7 inches) and third in the 55-meter hurdles (eight seconds flat) to tally 24 total points for the Red Riots. In the long jump, Sioho came up just short of senior Billy Albertson’s 22 feet, 7.5 inch performance — which was a Class A state championship meet record.
Other impressive individual performances in the boys division came from Noble senior Maddox Jordan and Marshwood junior Andre Clark. Jordan completed the rare distance running triple crown, winning the 800-meter (1:55.6) one-mile (4:17.2) and two-mile runs (9:45.1) outright for 30 total points. Clark, meanwhile, broke the 55-meter dash state record twice, first in the trials (6.45 seconds) and again in the finals (6.38 seconds).
On the girls side, Scarborough was led by distance running duo sophomore Laurel Driscoll and senior Kyleigh Record. Driscoll was the runner-up in the mile run (5:06.4) and Record was the runner-up in the 800-meter run (2:25.0). Driscoll also won bronze in the 800-meter and two-mile runs, and Record finished fourth in the mile.
Ahead of Driscoll and Record in the 800-meter and one-mile runs was Portland senior Samantha Moore, who won both events outright with times of 2:23.7 and 5:05.5, respectively. Moore also placed fourth in the two-mile.
Elsewhere, Lewiston senior Makenna Drouin and Brewer junior Lauren Vanidestine also starred. Drouin won three events outright — the 55-meter dash, the 55-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash — with times of 7.08, 8.41 and 26.04 respectively for 30 total points.
Vanidestine, meanwhile, set personal records in the 55-meter dash (7.37 seconds) and 200-meter dash (26.78 seconds), coming in second and third, respectively. Vanidestine also won the triple jump by more than two feet, with a distance of 36 feet and one inch.
