A man was riding a snowmobile on Lake St. George in Liberty late Monday afternoon when the vehicle partially broke through the ice.
The man didn’t go into the water, and firefighters were eventually able to remove the snowmobile using ropes attached to a tree on a nearby island, according to Deputy Chief Corey Bonnevey of Liberty Fire and Rescue. The vehicle was mostly dry and still functional when it came out.
“One of the skis on the front had broken through,” Bonnevey said.
The snowmobile went through a section of lake that’s often free of ice during winter, close to an island called Hawaii 2 that’s near the banks of Lake St. George State Park, according to the fire department. The rider was from another town and unaware of the open spot.
