A West Bath woman died Monday night after a chain-reaction crash on the Maine Turnpike in Saco.
Deidre Winberg, 53, was driving a Volvo S40 sedan north on the turnpike, near mile marker 37, about 7:17 p.m. when she rear-ended a Jeep Compass driven by 33-year-old Alicia Preston of Portland, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
The crash sent Winberg spinning out into the middle of the three lanes into the path of a tractor-trailer driven by 36-year-old Norvel Jackson of Fairburn, Georgia, Moss said Tuesday morning.
The tractor-trailer, registered to Three Lions Logistics Inc. of Andover, Massachusetts, went through the median guardrail, closing all three lanes of northbound traffic. Meanwhile, Preston drove her Jeep farther up the road before coming to a stop safely, according to Moss.
Winberg suffered critical injuries in the crash. She was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Preston also was taken to Maine Medical Center, where she was treated for injuries not considered life-threatening.
Jackson wasn’t injured.
The crash remains under investigation.
No additional information was immediately released.
