I was born and raised in Maine, and I have always been proud of Maine’s natural beauty, which leads to the quality of life we enjoy today. That’s why I am writing in support of the Advanced Clean Cars standards for Maine.
We Mainers have not only a right, but a privilege to call this place home and to steward this beautiful land. With our transportation sector contributing to almost 50 percent of our carbon emissions, Maine’s air quality — and subsequently the world’s — are at risk, among the other horrific fates that could occur if we do not curb our carbon dioxide emissions. We are already seeing the tragedies of global warming unfold on our coasts, where the Labrador Current is set to be one of the fastest warming currents on the planet. These are the waters I grew up swimming in, I want to preserve them for my future kids to splash in some day.
I think Maine must do everything in our power to prevent the worst effects of climate change, and that starts with us voters. We just saw the hottest summer on record, and we don’t need another record-breaking heatwave or four-day power outage to know that something must be done about it.
I believe the Board of Environmental Protection must pass Advanced Clean Cars standards for the economy, health and climate future of Maine. The more clean cars that are available, the more people can participate in the movement toward Maine’s climate goals.
