BRUNSWICK — Whether in an exercise class, at a presentation on the best practices for aging well, or receiving nutrition counseling, seniors in the Brunswick area can be found happily improving their lives at People Plus in Brunswick.
“The activities at People Plus are endless – from lectures to classes on everything under the sun,” said Stacy Frizzle-Edgerton, executive director. “Exercising, playing games, participating in art classes, you name it. It’s a great way to meet up with your friends or to make new ones. By next year, one-quarter of Maine’s population will be over age 65. Our job is to connect all those residents with services, companionship, and community. It’s just a very friendly place to gather and spend part of your day.”
And it’s a mission that has inspired Norway Savings Bank to be an ongoing donor, including a $1,500 donation this month and more than $13,000 overall.
“It’s an organization that was created to support an engaged, healthy, and independent life for older adults while providing opportunities for people of all ages to play a part in a special community,” said Dan Walsh, president and CEO of Norway Savings. “They tailor activities to the capability of participants and maintain such a warm and welcoming environment that puts the needs of guests first. It’s a very inspiring program.”
People Plus is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the facility on 35 Union Street, which also houses the Brunswick Area Teen Center, operated by People Plus and offering young people a safe, vibrant place to meet and blossom.
People Plus’ annual calendar features a number of special events that continue to grow in scope and popularity each year.
“Our Senior Health Expo drew over 950 participants in 2023 with over 100 businesses, services, and programs for seniors represented,” said Frizzle-Edgerton. “It brings together so many people in our community to share vital information, provide health services, and have fun.”
“We’re here to serve seniors in ways that are important and meaningful,” said Jill Ellis, program and events director at People Plus. “This year’s Expo will be on Oct. 10 and we are expecting another big crowd. Everyone has a great time and so many connections are formed.”
The organization also created the “Good Morning Program,” a daily safety check-in initiative; “Music in April,” a fundraiser that combines wonderful dining, live music, auctions, and more; and the Gelato Fiasco “Scoop-A-Thon” that raises money for the teen center.
In addition, People Plus organizes over 4,000 grocery and meal deliveries each year and provides tens of thousands of miles in free rides annually.
“The People Plus Volunteer Transportation Network provides help and rides for homebound community residents,” said Frizzle-Edgerton. “With over 700 registered riders, the VTN program is completely free and provides rides, grocery shopping and delivery service, and prescription and food pantry pickups in the Brunswick area.”
Over the years, People Plus has delivered a wide range of crucial assistance to countless residents, becoming a vital and beloved part of the Brunswick area and beyond in the process.
“We are proud to play a small part in the positive difference that the staff at People Plus makes each day,” said Walsh. “From teens to seniors, they are improving lives. No impact is greater than that.”For more information about People Plus, its services, and ways in which you can help, visit www.peopleplusmaine.org.
