Robert Card II, who committed the deadliest mass shooting in modern Maine history, was repeatedly promoted within the Army Reserve and praised for his leadership, devotion to safely training other soldiers, willingness to help others, and mental toughness.
The U.S. Army released Card’s personnel records on Tuesday to the Bangor Daily News as part of a public records request filed by the newspaper in October. You can read his evaluation reports, spanning January 2008 to April 2023, below.
The reviews stand in contrast to the concerns his family members shared with police in early May 2023 about Card’s declining mental health, apparent paranoia and access to firearms. Card went on to kill 18 and injure 13 at a bowling alley and bar in Lewiston on Oct. 25.
