This will be Bangor’s least snowy February in nearly a century.
As of Wednesday night, Bangor has only seen 0.9 inches of fresh snow fall during the month of February, according to the National Weather Service office in Caribou.
That’s the least snow dumped on the Queen City since 1998 when Bangor saw just an inch of fresh powder, and the lowest snowfall on record going back to 1926.
Normally Bangor would see about 17 inches of snow fall during the month of February, according to the weather service.
With sunshine on the forecast for Thursday, Bangor was on track to set that record.
That comes as Maine has seen an unusually warm February with minimal snow.
The spring-like weather that has predominated during stretches of the month prompted the cancellation of the Can-Am sled dog races in Aroostook County and a charity snowmobile ride in Piscataquis County. Anglers have been advised to remove ice shacks from lakes and ponds, while snowmobile clubs worry their season will end early if the weather doesn’t take a turn for winter soon.
On Wednesday, Bangor came within a degree of tying the high temperature record for the date. The high reached 50 degrees Fahrenheit, compared with the record 51 degrees set for Feb. 28 in 2017, based on records going back to 1926.
