SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — An investigation is underway after a fire caused extensive damage to a school gymnasium in South Berwick.
Fire officials say they responded to a fire at Seacoast Christian School on Paul Street just before 2 a.m. on Wednesday. When crews arrived, they found smoke and fire coming from the school’s gymnasium building.
Crew knocked down the fire in around 20 minutes. However, they say the gymnasium sustained extensive damage.
School officials say they’re not expecting classes to be affected on Wednesday, but the impact of the damage to the gymnasium could impact future events.
“We will certainly be impacted with our athletics department. That’s going to be the biggest impact for us. We actually have a school fundraising event coming up next month. It’s our largest fundraising event for our school which was set to take place in the gymnasium,” said Ryan Therrien, the chairman of the Seacoast Christian School Board.
South Berwick Fire Chief Nick Hamel says no one was hurt and no other school buildings were damaged.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
