Appointed as Brewer High School’s head outdoor track coach in December, Dan Juilli stepped down on Wednesday, having accepted the same position at Orono High School.
A member of Brewer’s class of 2006, Juilli had served as the school’s assistant outdoor track coach since 2007, and head indoor track coach since 2012. Juilli applied to be Brewer’s outdoor track coach last year when longtime coach Glendon Rand retired.
Specializing in sprinting events and technical events like the pole vault and triple jump, Juilli coached the girls to indoor track Class B state championships in 2019 and 2020. It remains unclear if Juilli will continue coaching Brewer’s indoor track team as well.
Juilli declined to speak to the media on Wednesday.
Brewer Athletic Director Dave Utterback plans on replacing Juilli by March 25.
“It is our focus to fill this position immediately so the student-athletes and their families at Brewer High School can rest assured that the season will carry on, as scheduled, with the best possible individuals leading the program,” Utterback said.
“We sincerely wish Coach Juilli all the best as he leads a new program in a different community. His impact here in Brewer’s historic track & field program will continue for years to come. He has coached athletes on every level of the competitive spectrum – and in some of the most difficult events to specialize in, especially the pole vault. Brewer has always been strong in these events, in-part due to Dan’s mentorship of the athletes. He will be hard to replace.”
Orono Athletic Director Mike Archer said that the Red Riots also had an open head coaching position this offseason, due to Chris Libby’s decision to step down.
Archer said that Juilli applied for the job in early February, and didn’t mention why he was going to turn down the opportunity with Brewer.
“We had an opportunity to interview him, and didn’t focus on the ‘why’,” Archer said. “We’re elated to bring him on our staff, and excited to see what he’s going to be able to do.”
Led by senior Ruth White and junior Will Francis, Orono won both the boys and girls Class C state championships in outdoor track last June.
