Two troopers were injured and a Limerick couple were arrested Saturday after police attempted to intervene in a domestic violence assault in progress.
At about 10:53 p.m. state police troopers went to Long Street in Limerick based on a call from a neighbor that Justin Savage, 41, had assaulted his girlfriend in front of their home, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release.
Police detained Savage, but during the investigation he became combative and struggled to get away. Savage fell on one of the troopers, Sgt. Adam Schmidt, breaking his ankle. He then bit another trooper, Jamie Fenderson, on the hand, Moss said.
During the struggle, Savage’s girlfriend, Shawna Morse, 26, attempted to help Savage, according to police.
Savage was charged with domestic violence assault, assault on a police officer, refusing to submit to arrest, and disorderly conduct. Morse was charged with obstructing government administration and refusal to submit to arrest. Both were brought to York County Jail.
Sgt. Schmidt was treated at a hospital and released but will require surgery, Moss said.
