The ND Paper Mill in Rumford is adjusting its operations, resulting in numerous worker layoffs and an uncertain future for around 100 employees.
Around 34 workers were reportedly laid off from the mill on Thursday, the Lewiston Sun Journal reported, and the company claimed that approximately 100 employees would be affected by changes in operations.
The company said in a statement to the media that it was reallocating resources and production capacity in response to consumer demand. The mill is reportedly converting a paper machine from producing packaging paper to produce bleached linerboard and pulp, according to the Sun Journal.
While the company did not respond to inquiries on whether layoffs were underway, or how many employees would be affected, it said in a statement that it would follow the terms of the union labor contract.
Further details about job impacts were not immediately available on Friday afternoon.
