There is no video footage of the moment the Brewer police chief fatally shot a man last week, according to the Maine attorney general’s office.
Chief Jason Moffit fatally shot a man who allegedly had a gun and tried to rob Walmart on Friday morning, Brewer police said.
Following a request from the Bangor Daily News for video of when Moffit shot the man, Jonathan Bolton, public access officer for the Maine AG, said there is no footage showing the moment of the shooting.
It’s unclear why there is no footage. Brewer police started wearing body cameras in early 2020. The cameras are worn by officers on their uniforms, but it’s unknown if Moffit typically wears a uniform or body camera. Brewer police didn’t respond to a request for comment or for a copy of the department’s body camera policy.
In Bangor, employees who don’t typically wear uniforms, such as plain-clothes detectives, only wear body cameras when they’re in uniform.
The fatal shooting came after staff at the Brewer Walmart tried to detain the alleged robber around 10:26 a.m. Friday. He was able to escape, leading to a police chase through the woods, according to police
Moffit found the man near the city public works building on Green Point Road, and “issued commands,” to the man, which he did not follow, Brewer police said. The man appeared to reach for a weapon, and Moffit shot and killed him, police said.
Police have not released the identity of the man.
Moffit is on administrative leave while the Maine Office of the Attorney General investigates the shooting, as it does with all fatal shootings by police in Maine.
