The calendar may say April, but spring weather is not in store for this week in Maine. A nor’easter looks to bring significant amounts of snow, wind and rain Wednesday through Friday.
Monday will at least be nice and mild with a good amount of sun. Highs will be in the low or even mid-50s for the afternoon.
Tuesday also is pretty quiet, though a stray shower can’t be ruled out. Highs will be near 50 with increasing clouds heading into the afternoon.
The storm will get going on Wednesday afternoon, and it will start out with just light coastal rain and light inland and mountain snow.
As we head into Wednesday night and the storm intensifies, the rain will turn to snow, the snow will become heavy, and the winds will pick up as well.
The storm really picks up late Wednesday night. Heavy snow and strong winds will make for very difficult travel conditions Thursday morning.
With the heavy wet nature of the snow and the wind, power outages are looking likely, at least to a scattered level.
Snow and blowing snow could lead to near blizzard conditions at times.
The storm begins to wind down Thursday afternoon and evening.
Snow will lighten up, and probably mix over to light rain along the coast. Lighter rain and snow will continue into Friday morning.
We’ll see mostly rain outside the mountains at this point with mountain snow continuing.
Light snow and rain showers will continue all the way until Saturday as the storm takes a long time moving out of the region.
Coastal areas will see the most mixing and lowest amounts. Still, significant amounts of snow for April is expected with 5 to 10 inches.
We’ll easily see a foot or more inland — 2 feet or even more is possible in the mountains.
After the storm, sunshine returns Sunday. Early indications are Sunday’s dry and mild weather will continue into Monday, so the early eclipse forecast looks good. Fingers crossed it remains that way.
