A potential sinkhole has blocked a lane of travel at a busy Bangor intersection on Monday.
There is a roughly 2-foot wide hole in the intersection of Oak and Washington streets, as the State Street bridge begins. Barricades around the hole blocked one of the lanes for traffic driving toward Veazie as of 3:15 p.m. Monday.
Public works set up barricades around the hole, and a team will inspect it to determine necessary repairs on Tuesday and if it’s a sinkhole, Director of Public Works Aaron Huotari said.
Bangor public works typically repairs a few sinkholes every spring. A sinkhole is a depression in pavement compared with potholes, which are caused by water weakening the pavement before it breaks apart from the weight of vehicles driving on the road.
Earlier in the day Monday, a sinkhole closed a road in Gorham.
