Brewer High School assistant principal Fred Lower is taking on the role of head football coach.
Lower’s appointment was announced by Superintendent of Schools Gregg Palmer at Monday night’s Brewer School Committee meeting. Lower brings nearly three decades of coaching experience to the position, having formerly been athletic director and head football coach at Hampden Academy, football and baseball coach at Bangor High and offensive coordinator at Husson University.
Lower replaces fellow Brewer High School faculty member Scott Flagg, who stepped down in March following a four-year stint as the Witches’ head coach. Under Flagg’s leadership, Brewer’s participation numbers rebounded from less than 30 to more than 55, but the program struggled to a 6-23 overall record.
Lower was selected due to his coaching resume and existing relationship with the student body, according to Brewer Athletic Director Dave Utterback. His goals for the fall 2024 season are to continue rebuilding around Brewer’s young core, establish accountability, preach fundamentals and usher in a new era of Brewer football.
“[We want to] form an identity, be fundamentally sound and play a physical style of football. It is important to continue to improve as the season goes on,” Lower said. “[Coaching] is an additional way to connect with the student body and faculty and a way to be more involved with the school community outside of the regular school day.”
In addition to serving as Brewer’s assistant principal and head football coach, Lower is currently the chairperson of the Maine Principals Association Football Committee and a board certified football official.
Lower expects to have his assistant coaching staff selected by mid-May, and will begin voluntary summer workouts with players in mid-June.
